As the push for devolution and amendment of the 1999 Constitution gathers pace, the pressure on members of the National Assembly to harken to the demands of their constituents has never been more stringent.
However, Nigerian legislators have often been criticized for acting as a rubber stamp of the Executive arm of government and ignoring their role as critical pillars in the entrenchment of democratic governance in the country.
As enablers of draconian Executive orders and actions, concerns abound that lawmakers at both state and federal levels have lost the moral compass to represent the people that elected them to office. A bigger concern is the penchant by parliamentarians to legislate on bills that do not serve the wider good but empower the Executive to circumvent the rights of the people.
Director-General of the institution, Prof Abubakar Sulaiman, discusses the role of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies in strengthening legislative and democratic governance at a time Nigerian media practitioners have expressed opposition to the amendment to the Nigerian Press Council Act.
